At first glance, you might think Sphynx cats are low maintenance compared to their fellow long-haired friends. But no fur to brush or vacuum up doesn’t mean less care, in fact Sphynx are some of the highest maintenance cats out there. sphynx kittens for sale $500

In addition to their temperature sensitivity, their exposed skin makes them sensitive to dirt, oil, moisture, and other environmental factors. They also happen to be one of the more social breeds, meaning they like attention or companionship with other animals around the house. Beyond that, they come with all the other trouble associated with relatively rare breeds of cat.

GROOMING

Just like humans, cats produce oil that is usually absorbed by their hair or fur. Without something to absorb the oils, Sphynxes are more prone to buildup than other types of cats. While this isn’t your typical emergency health issue, it can lead to acne, outbreaks, or sensitive skin (not to mention one uncomfortable cat). It’s best to do a warm, weekly water bath to keep your Sphynx clean and happy. Your vet may recommend specialized shampoos for hairless cats to help keep their skin healthy, but as with any skin, it’s a good idea to rinse carefully and avoid excess shampoo drying and causing irritation.

Be sure to take special care of any spots where dirt or oil might hide. If your Sphynx has a few skin folds, unwashed ears, or cat toe jam, it’s probably a good idea to wash those areas carefully too. With a lack of hair anywhere, the small crevices between toes, in folds, and around the ears can be particularly at risk for irritation and build-up.

Whenever you apply moisture to a Sphynx, make sure you do a thorough pat-down after to soak up any excess. Since they don’t have a coat of fur to keep them warm it’s important to keep them dry.

TEMPERATURE – sphynx kittens for sale $500

A lack of fur doesn’t just mean a few extra baths, it means no build in heating system as well. While other animals enjoy a warm coat of fur, Sphynx cats have to find other ways to warm up. It’s important to keep them in mind when the colder months roll through so you can provide them any extra heat they might need.

Sphynx tend to be pretty social cats, and part of that might be their need for warmth. Not emotional warmth, more like a big, human-shaped heatrock. Sphynx may seek out human companionship or the company of other cats and house pets as a means of seeking warmth. Additionally, they have a fairly high metabolism and appetite, which can lend to a sort of internal warming process as they’re regularly burning more energy for warmth or activity.

One way to ensure your furless friends stay warm is by providing a number of cozy spots around the home for them to curl up in. Fleece blankets, or heated beds if possible, are perfect for keeping your Sphynx happy. Depending on their temperament, some Sphynx may be open to clothes of some type (sweaters, jackets, etc). Of course, not all will love the extra layer,

so it’s important to pay attention to how your cat reacts to clothes.

If they’re stressed out or clearly not comfortable with something like a sweater,

it’s best not to force them to wear one if it’s not absolutely necessary.

While it might seem like you can avoid this dilemma by living with your Sphynx in warm stretch of the world, you might have to think again.

While they are incredibly prone to the cold,

Sphynx also lack the fur coat necessary to block out the sun’s rays. That means they’re susceptible sunburns just like we are. Beyond that, without an insulation layer, they might have trouble regulating their body temperature in the heat. While they don’t want to be cold, they do need to be cool to avoid overheating. And again, being outside tends to expose their already exposed skin to the dirt and stuff outside.

Sphynx cats are a special breed but the high maintenance comes with high reward. These cats are known to be one of the friendliest breeds with rambunctious personalities. Once you get accustomed to their soft skin in place of fur, they’ll be your new favorite cuddle buddy.

8-Week-Old Puppies: What to Expect

Size

Most 8-week-old puppies are only a fraction of their adult height, length, and weight. Puppies generally grow rapidly between birth and 6 months of age. How much they grow will depend on their breed as well as their nutrition throughout their youth.

Teething

Puppies at 8 weeks of age will have all 28 of their baby teeth and may have already developed their first adult teeth, the front incisors.

Intelligence

8-week-old puppies are growing increasingly curious and interested in their environments. Although capable of learning, they have a very short attention span. Owners should keep a variety of simple toys for their puppies to investigate. Puppies will also play rough and tumble with their littermates while gradually learning to play independently. It is extremely important for puppies to socialize with people and pets of various ages, sizes, and shapes at this age to ensure successful socialization. Puppies should be allowed to adjust to new experiences, sights, sounds, and sensations on their own terms.

Play & Agility

Most puppies are clumsy around this age. After all, most only learn to walk at 3 weeks of age and run at 5 weeks of age. They are developing their gross motor skills, which help them to run, play, and “hunt.” Their fine motor skills will come later. Puppies also learn to jump up at this stage. This is a normal behavior that can turn into an undesirable one if the puppy reaches adulthood and retains a desire to jump on every new person they meet. Owners can begin to discourage unwanted jumping by rewarding good behavior with treats and other forms of positive reinforcement.

Physical Appearance & Hair Coat

8-week-old puppies have a baby-type hair coat that is very fine and sheds very little. Short brushing sessions are the best way for puppies to grow more accustomed to the experience of being groomed. Puppies’ muzzles begin to grow longer at this age, and, in some breeds, ears begin to stand up.

Sleep

Puppies that are 8 weeks old sleep approximately 18 to 22 hours per day. The rest of their day is spent eating, playing, and taking potty breaks.

What Your 8-Week-Old Puppy Needs

Vaccines

8-week-old puppies should have received at least their first set of shots. The typical vaccine is a “combination” that protects against canine distemper virus, canine hepatitis, parainfluenza, and canine parvovirus (the four viruses are commonly abbreviated as DHPP). Many veterinarians also recommend incorporating protection against leptospirosis into this vaccination (DHLPP), and possibly coronavirus (DHLPPC) protection as well. Additionally, Lyme disease vaccination may be recommended depending on a pet’s location and activity level. Individual states may also have animal vaccination laws to consider.

Dewormers

Fecal examination is the microscopic examination of stool for parasites and may be done to confirm if there are worms or determine which worms are present.

Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm prevention is important to puppies that are at risk and should generally start before puppies reach six months of age.

Flea/Tick Control

Veterinarians may suggest a range of potential anti-pest treatments.

Diet

Most puppies are weaned between 6 to 8 weeks of age, after which they leave their mothers and begin eating solid food. A 2-month-old should eat four meals per day of a high-quality puppy food formulated for dogs of their size.

Based on body weight, puppies require nearly twice as many calories as adult dogs. The number of calories a 2-month-old puppy needs varies with their size, activity level, and weight.

Approximate calorie requirements for the different breed sizes are as follows:

  • 225 for toy-breed dogs
  • 400 for small-breed dogs
  • 530 for medium-breed dogs
  • 990 for large-breed dogs
  • 1220 for giant-breed dogs

It’s also a good idea for new pet owners to consult their vet’s office for guidance related to their puppy’s diet and nutrition.

What to Expect in Your Puppy’s First Eight Weeks – puppies for sale -puppies for sale

puppy‘s relationships with their mother and littermates during the first 8 weeks of life help determine their personality and what kind of companion they’ll become for their family.
Puppies develop rapidly. At birth, they are blind and deaf. They can’t eliminate on their own or regulate their body heat. Yet, they grow so quickly that you can witness their progress from day to day. Here is a basic guide to a young puppy’s first few weeks of life:

Weeks 1 and 2

While her newborn puppies spend 90 percent of their time sleeping, a mother’s instincts tell her to keep them huddled together for warmth, since a chill can kill them. Although the new puppies can’t see or hear, their senses of smell and touch guide them to mom’s nipples. During the first week, her milk will provide them with antibodies that will help them survive for 6 to 10 weeks. She also licks their tummies and genitals to help them urinate and defecate.

A tiny newborn’s legs are so weak they can barely wriggle their way to the nearby nipple and the comfort of their siblings. During puppy sleep, twitching movements, called activated sleep, help strengthen their legs. If the mother allows, the breeder or other main caretaker can begin to pick up each pup several times a day. This early, gentle human touch will help the dog bond with people later in life.

Week 3

During their third week, a puppy’s senses open up. They can detect light, dark, and movement and will begin to respond to sudden or loud sounds. As they paw and mouth their littermates, they’ll build early social skills too. They can relieve themselves on their own now. Although they are not ready to wean, a vet may recommend introducing puppies to veterinarian-prescribed gruel. By the end of the week, puppies at this age can crawl and their tails will begin to wag.

Weeks 4 and 5 -puppies for sale

Quickly gaining strength and coordination, puppies begin to respond to their environments. They can bark, stand, walk, run, and even pounce. Their mother teaches them to eliminate away from their sleeping area.

They’re learning to play by wrestling with their littermates. When they’ve nipped too hard, they learn the difference between hard and soft biting, thanks to batting from their siblings. At this point, puppies are forever testing their limits and will take turns sleeping at the top and bottom of the sibling pile. Hunting and chasing instincts kick in, making this the best time for human caretakers to introduce toys.

The mother dog referees when playtime gets too rough. She may nudge or restrain an errant pup, or she may growl, teaching them good habits and acclimating them to the training process. If they’re not properly socialized, orphaned dogs raised without a mother and littermates may have a hard time relating to other dogs, as well as human companions.

Toward the end of this socialization period, it’s time for the caretaker’s family to become more involved with the young puppy. This will help familiarize them with the sights, sounds, and smells of everyday life.

Since they’re cutting their first teeth, mothers begin to wean puppies at this time. She might chew her food and then regurgitate it for her puppies to eat.

Weeks 6 and 7 – puppies for sale

At this point, a puppy’s muzzle will grow longer, and they’ll begin to look more like the adults of their breed. Their emotions will become apparent too. They’ll whine to show fear, whimper when hurt, and bark when they’re excited or eager for attention.

The mother’s role evolves to that of pack leader as her brood matures. Her young pups are weaned now, they’ve grown teeth and can eat solid food. She is affectionate and playful with them, teasing them with toys and showing them when to bite and when not to. She lets them know she’s the dominant dog and corrects them sharply if they misbehave.

A puppy’s appetite for exploring their environment and learning new things will benefit tremendously if they are given a variety of simple toys to investigate at this stage. They will also play rough and tumble with their littermates, stealing and sharing toys. By this point, they should be spending a short time each day alone with a human, playing gently and learning to relate one-on-one in a safe environment.

Week 8 – puppies for sale

By this age, your puppy can remember some commands and which behaviors are considered appropriate, as well as where and when they are fed. They can even begin the potty training, crate training, and grooming processes. They are ready to leave their mother and littermates to go home with their new puppy-parents, fully capable of taking their place in the family.

exotic pet for sale care is very different than many people think. With a dog, you make sure they have nutritious food, plenty of fresh water, play time and take them for frequent walks to get lots of exercise. With a cat, the same applies with food and water, you make sure they have a clean litter box and give them plenty of attention.

However, when it comes to exotic animals, their general care and training is going to be very different – even challenging for some. In this article we will cover what to do in order to keep your exotic pet both happy and healthy, as well as what not to do, so your animal companion doesn’t end up taking a trip to the avian, reptile and exotic pet hospital.

What to Know About Exotics Before You Decide to Take One on as a Pet

Exotics come with a very different set of needs than dogs, cats or any other commonly kept animal. Exotic animals require another level of care and they can have very challenging temperaments. For example, parrots can become holy terrors if not given the proper training and attention when they are young.

Contrary to popular belief, locking them in a cage is the exact opposite of what should be done. A bird’s cage should be a sanctuary for them. With the proper training you actually shouldn’t even need to close the cage door – they will happily put themselves to bed and quiet down. They should have a safe, secure area to explore outside of their cage whilst under your supervision.

Obviously you don’t want them to have access to anything potentially harmful, but keep in mind that they need a fair amount of freedom to be happy. As with anything in life, exotic pets need a healthy balance between freedom and structure. Sounds similar to having a dog or cat doesn’t it? Well, here are the major differences.

Keeping your Companion Out of the Avian and Exotic Pet Hospital – exotic pet for sale

While you definitely want to have regular check-up visits with your exotic specialist vet, you don’t want to be taking your life companion in for an emergency visit to the avian and exotic pet hospital.

The Enclosure is Paramount

One of the most important parts of keeping exotics as a pet is making sure they have the proper enclosure. Exotic care starts with where the animal lives – where it spends the majority of its life. If you have a turtle, their enclosure will need to be different from that of a land tortoise.

The needs of a budgerigar will be different than that of a cockatoo or Indian ringneck. All of these factors are something you need to take into consideration and of course as your vet for exotic pets, we will be happy to give you all of the advice necessary – we want to make sure your animal companion is living life to its fullest.

Diet is Everything for exotic pet for sale

Exotic pets require special attention when it comes to their diet. One common misconception about birds is that sunflower seeds are a staple of their diet. That couldn’t be further from the truth and as it turns out they are basically just fast food in the bird world. They are fine as a treat in small amounts, but if they are a large part of their regular diet, get ready for regular visits to the avian exotic animal clinic.

If you are looking for exotic pets that are easy to care for, think again. No animal should be in your life simply because you want one. Think long and hard about that statement. If you want to have an animal in your life because you truly desire companionship, then it shouldn’t matter what level of care is required for them to be happy. No one should have a snake simply because they want to have one – it is not just an ornament for you to show to your friends.

Exotic animal care is not for the faint of heart. That being said, it is incredibly rewarding if you are fully invested and willing to learn. It’s hard to explain the feeling that comes from your bird happily flying around your home and enjoying itself, taking a bit of time to come and say hello to you. Or when your snake climbs up your arm when you open their enclosure. It’s an amazing experience.

Great Exotic Pets are a Product of Training

The reality is that great exotic pets are reflections of the owner’s relationship with them. Are you taking the time to be the best master for your student? As with anything, exotics go through stages. They will be young and then they will be adolescent, this period is absolutely crucial when it comes to training.

Avian and exotic animal care can be challenging and extremely rewarding. Just make sure that you understand the animals needs before you decide to take them on. We hope you found this article useful, for more articles on unusual exotic pets and how to care for them

In the wild, birds are agile communicators. They use unique sounds to identify and bond with their flock. Their advanced communication skills help flock mates stay in touch while migrating over oceans, hunting in dense forests and scanning the sky for predators. buy african grey parrot online

Considering how important “talking” is to birds’ survival in the wild, it’s perhaps no surprise that when we take them on as pets, they want to communicate with us, too.

“Birds hear people making these noises to each other and they think, ‘maybe if I make the same noises I can fit in with this flock,’” said board-certified avian veterinarian Dr. Peter Helmer of BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Tampa, FL. “People usually respond positively, and that reinforces the behavior.”

With lifespans topping 50 years for some species, teaching a pet bird to speak gives you the opportunity to form a unique, long-lasting relationship that would be hard to replicate with any other pet.

“There’s a level of communication and bonding you can’t have with any other animal,” said Dr. Laurie Hess, a board-certified avian veterinarian and owner of the Veterinary Center for Birds and Exotics in Bedford Hills, NY.

Here, find out more about which common pet birds are the chattiest and how to train your bird to talk.

Which Birds are the Best Talkers? – buy african grey parrot online

African grey parrots and some species of Amazon parrots are more likely than others to learn to talk, the doctors said. But they’re not the only ones. “I once had a patient, a little parakeet, who spoke English, Spanish and Hebrew,” said Hess.

However, regardless of species, most birds don’t start communicating until they’re about a year old, she said. It’s not clear why.

“It seems that, like children, their brains are processing language and sounds early on,” she said. But it takes them longer to use what they’ve learned to try and communicate back.

While birds pick up a lot when they’re young, they can learn to speak at any point in their development (it’s just more difficult to teach a bird to speak if it was a poor communicator throughout most of its life). “You can absolutely teach an old bird new tricks,” said Helmer.

Teaching Your Bird to Talk: It Starts with a Relationship

Humans have to learn to crawl before they walk and similarly, birds have to learn to trust before they talk. Anything you can do to build and strengthen your relationship with your pet will make it more inclined to want to communicate with you, said Helmer.

When it comes to bonding with birds, the goal is to get them to associate you with something positive, said Hess. This could be a treat, head scratches or verbal praise, like greeting the bird in a high-pitched, sing-song voice. You want to be seen as a provider of good experiences so the bird is encouraged to interact with you, she said.

“Having that positive bond tells them you’re a flock mate and a friend,” said Helmer.

Then, Figure Out Your Bird’s Favorite Rewards

Like training any animal, teaching a bird to talk starts with breaking down the desired action into small, easily reward-able behaviors and then gradually raising the bar.

While some birds are motivated by physical affection, the doctors said, most are willing to work hard for a tasty snack. Try experimenting with peanuts, sunflower seeds, or tiny pieces of cracker. In general birds can have just about anything we eat except avocados, chocolate and salty foods, said Hess. It’s also recommended to avoid anything with caffeine.

Different birds have different tastes. Discovering which treat motivates your bird is part of the relationship-building process, said Helmer.

Pick a Simple Word, and Don’t Stop Saying It -buy african grey parrot online

To encourage your bird to mimic you, pick a starter word that’s one or two syllables long, said Hess. Say it repeatedly to the bird throughout the day, using the same tone and inflection each time, and pair it with a reward. “Birds will pay attention to you and do what you want if you give them something to work for,” she said.

Good starter words include “hello,” “hi,” and your bird’s name, if it’s not too complex.

“The word itself is not so important, but the person teaching it needs to know this is a word they’ll potentially hear a lot of,” said Helmer.

Some birds will start to mimic you in a few days; others may take a few months. But with enough repetition, the bird will start associating the noises you’re making with treats and positive interactions, said Helmer, and they’ll try to fit in.

“Birds are flock animals,” he said. “What they really want is that interaction with their flock.”

Once your bird masters one word, try adding another, slowly building up to a full sentence or phrase. Raise the bar slowly, rewarding them for saying two words, then three, then four.

“Each time the bird adds a word, we praise and reward it with a novel treat,” said Hess. “That’s how we build a bird up to learning a song, for example.”

Reinforce Desired Behaviors

Sometimes birds are a little too good at mimicking the noises in their environment. They may start imitating the beep of a microwave, the sound of the garbage truck, or the expletives of an occasionally potty-mouthed owner.

If your bird picks up undesired words or annoying noises, just ignore it, Helmer said. Don’t yell or douse the animal with a spray bottle. Instead, leave the room or turn your back. “Their vocabulary will change over time based on what you reinforce and what you don’t,” he said.
